How to look after your tyres
As the only connection between your Škoda and the road, your tyres play a critical role in ensuring control, safety, and performance. A damaged or underperforming tyre can affect your drive – and your peace of mind. Here are some essential tyre care tips to help you stay safe on the road.
Tyre Tips
Avoid the kerb
Be mindful when parking – bumping against the kerb can damage the tyre’s rubber and internal structure. In the worst cases, this may cause a blowout at high speed.
Check your pressure
Regularly check your tyre pressure, ideally when tyres are cold. Most service stations have pressure gauges. Never deflate warm tyres – wait until they’ve cooled down for an accurate reading.
Balance matters
Ensure your tyres are properly balanced every time they’re changed. This extends tyre life and protects key components like suspension, bearings, and steering. Proper wheel alignment also helps tyres wear evenly.
Drive smoothly
Avoid sharp cornering, sudden braking and aggressive driving. A smoother style extends tyre life and improves fuel efficiency.
Inspect frequently
Check tyre tread depth often and look for cuts, bulges, or uneven wear that may signal a problem.
Keep them clean
Avoid contact with oil, grease, and fuel. These substances can degrade rubber over time.
Are overinflated tyres okay?
No – too much pressure can lead to a harsh ride, uneven tread wear, and reduced tyre lifespan.
Are underinflated tyres okay?
Not at all – underinflated tyres compromise handling, braking, and fuel economy. They can also lead to overheating and premature wear.
Tyre labels explained
There’s more to your tyres than meets the eye. Here's what the codes and numbers mean:
Tyre width (mm): Most passenger cars use tyres ranging from 125mm to 335mm wide.
Height/width ratio: This shows the tyre sidewall height as a percentage of its width. A lower ratio means a sportier, lower-profile tyre.
Tyre structure:
- R (Radial): Most common type, with filaments at right angles to direction of travel.
- D (Diagonal): Less common, older style.
- RF (Run-flat): Designed to keep working even when punctured.
Rim diameter (inches): Measured across the wheel rim, commonly between 10” and 20”.
Load index: Indicates the maximum weight the tyre can safely support.
Speed index: The maximum safe speed, when paired with the load index.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
If the TPMS warning light appears, your tyre pressure may be significantly low or the tyre may be damaged. Drive carefully, avoid sharp manoeuvres, and check your tyres as soon as it’s safe.
How deep should my tyre tread be?
Look for the built-in tread wear indicators – small ridges inside the grooves. If the tread is level with these indicators, it’s time to replace your tyres. Deeper tread improves water dispersion and reduces the risk of aquaplaning.
Can I drive on a space saver spare wheel?
Space savers are a temporary solution. After fitting one, head to Škoda Artarmon or your nearest tyre specialist to replace or repair the damaged tyre. Drive conservatively, avoid sudden steering or braking, and keep below 80km/h.
